Cold Ember is an expedition and storytelling platform. We organize physically demanding journeys in close collaboration with local communities, and document these expeditions through honest, character-driven films. Adventure is the means; stories and impact are the outcome.
Both. Cold Ember operates through two closely connected branches: Expeditions, which design and run the journeys, and Media, which creates the documentaries and visual stories that emerge from them. The two exist to strengthen each other.
We don’t treat destinations or people as backdrops. Our expeditions are built around shared effort, local collaboration, and real stakes. Participants don’t just observe stories cultures, they become part of them, and the impact is tangible rather than symbolic.
They are intentionally demanding. These are not comfort-first journeys. You will walk long days, carry weight, deal with weather, and step outside routine comfort. That physical effort is part of what makes the stories honest and the impact meaningful.
In most cases, you book your own flights so you can choose your preferred departure airport and baggage options. We provide recommended flight windows and meeting points.
You’ll need travel insurance that covers the activities on the trip (e.g., trekking at altitude, diving, remote areas) and includes medical coverage and evacuation. We’ll specify the minimum requirements per expedition.
Every expedition has a clear difficulty and fitness expectation. If you’re unsure, we’ll help you assess it honestly. For demanding trips, training beforehand isn’t optional—it’s part of the deal.
Group size varies per expedition. We cap groups to keep the experience manageable and safe. The exact maximum and minimum group size is shown on the trip page.
Yes. If the minimum is not reached by a certain date, we may offer an alternative date, a refund, or another solution as described in the booking terms.
That depends on the trip. Some expeditions use shared rooms or tents by default. If single supplements are available, they’ll be listed on the trip page.
Most trips require a deposit to secure your spot, with the remaining balance due later. The exact deposit amount and payment deadlines are shown during checkout/booking.
Impact means something concrete changes on the ground. This can be equipment delivered directly to porters, support for local initiatives, environmental restoration work, or long-term partnerships. Impact is planned before the expedition, not improvised afterward.
By working with local partners as equals, not subjects. We never replace local labor, never “perform” help for the camera, and never tell stories without consent and context. Local voices are central — both during the expedition and in the films.
On Flagship/Founding Expeditions: yes, as part of a professional documentary production. On Satellite Expeditions: most of the time not.
Yes. Participants must have valid travel insurance covering adventure activities, evacuation, and medical care. We provide guidance on what coverage is required. We can help you with arranging the insurance.
